01 About BMSS
An international society of experts in blood transfusion avoidance, working to make bloodless care the standard — not the exception.
BMSS is an international, multidisciplinary society of experts in blood transfusion avoidance. Founded in 2015, it is a unique medical society committed to improving clinical outcomes and protecting patients’ rights by promoting techniques of total avoidance of allogeneic blood transfusion.
Blood transfusion is associated with hazards and adverse outcomes, without established evidence of benefit. Current scientific evidence suggests transfusion is an independent risk factor for morbidity and mortality across patient groups — while bloodless care is linked to improved outcomes, including shorter hospital stays and lower mortality.
Our mission is to bring the benefits of that evidence to patients and clinicians worldwide, by encouraging the teaching and practice of bloodless medicine, and by supporting research and the dissemination of scientific information.
Our vision
Bloodless care — not as an alternative, but as the global standard of care.
BMSS, founded 2015
Promote techniques of total avoidance of allogeneic transfusion, grounded in current scientific evidence.
Encourage the teaching and practice of bloodless medicine across disciplines, institutions and borders.
Protect patients’ rights to care that respects informed choice and clinical evidence.
02 Annual conferences
Each year the society convenes clinicians, researchers and programme leads around the evidence, systems and skills that make transfusion-free care possible.
03 BMS Week
Every May, BMSS Week devotes five days to a single clinical theme — moving from principles to hands-on practice with the teams who deliver bloodless care.
2026
04 Evidence library
